Now that's OLD!
SEO, internet marketing… the two things that anyone can start learning, yet also something that you never really finish learning, that’s the nature of the internet, change happens – fast and often.
It would use all our time up trying to keep up with it, which is why it’s far better to keep it simple from the start and not run before you walk… as they say.
You don’t have to leave no stone unturned like many of the die-hards.
For me the biggest lesson is that the bare basics work… from thereon everything is a bonus, but importantly we should only make one change at a time, how else will we be able measure it’s overall effect?
The bottom line is…
With SEO… we are after better traffic results.
With internet marketing… we are after better conversion results.
It goes without saying improve the first and you also get better results in the second… without even doing anything.
Improve the conversion though and you get even more out of the traffic without the need to grow it so much… a catch 22 isn’t it, a self feeding circle of influence, improve either and things improve overall.
Happy days!

That looks like a bit of Cretaceous fossiliferous limestone – and its usually pretty hard to ID rocks from a casual photo

I absolutely agree man! very well said. My perspectives with regards to this industry is to only rely with quality and ethical methodologies. With integrity, the universe will give back more than what you have given out (I hope so), but it does work most of the time right?
Knowing the basics may not be enough, but it can take you a long way for sure.

Knowing the basics is 100% better than knowing nothing.

You are right when you say that the bare basics work. It is funny how much difference you can make with a page just by tweaking the title. Titles are everything. If you only knew about two factors at all, you would do well with titles and links.

I would agree they are both key parts of the bigger picture… like you say if you only had to know two things, they’d be good ones to know.
SEO and Internet Marketing are certainly separate beasts, but occupy the same lair. Usually, conversion rates correlate to strategic traffic growth. Building organic, targeted traffic to a site should see an increase in conversion rates. If conversion rates are growing while traffic remains the same, you’ve hit a beneficial keyword target for traffic.
