Links
I need more coming back too! 🙂

Links, the real web currency, we all know that much. 🙂

Although links are definitely not all equal!

Backlinks are important, linking out is important, what you link to is important, who links to you is important, what anchor text is used in the link is important, and so on… smarter people than me have written plenty about links.

Linking is just important, but’s it not everything.

The value of the currency seems to be set by Google, which is the issue I have really, how long can we keep doing all this dancing around for Google?

They created and change the “game” all the time, they can be hypocrites, yet they dictate what almost everyone does online, insane!

Yet, I know you have to optimise for rankings, play the game along their rules to get the traffic you need, I know you get adsense cheques too, I know you try your best to be “whitehat” and do good SEO, I know you try to be relevant for them, I know all this is done to keep feeding that cycle, while hoping it scales up, if it scales in one or two places the rest will anyway.

But I also know, like me, you are unsure really where the lines are, what the rules really mean and how they apply to you, because it seems Google apply different rules to different people, fair? … No I don’t think so either. 😉

Do no evil? Um…

Google seems to be a mass of contradictions.

Google money comes mainly in the form of adsense, yet in any adsense block you don’t have total control over what links they show, scammy ones can show up simple because google don’t police it enough, or maybe they feel it’s to many, so don’t try hard enough, they even say they are not affiliated with the links which is bollocks really, how can they not be affiliated with them?

Google is running a business, so they should be taking whatever measures to stop the crap links…they have improved it lots over the last year or so though…

But,  are paid links spam? … If so, what are they doing with adsense? Sheesh! 😡

They don’t mind you making money online of course, as long as you make it from/with them, they need to get something out of it, which takes the piss, if I want to have a post here, sharing something of value with an anchored keyword even IF I get paid to do so, wtf has that gotta do with Google?

Nothing, so if it’s obviously a link that’s paid for why should that effect my PR, ranking, adsense value or anything else?

Google are losing some control, that’s good

Google want full control and all your data to utilise, their simple mission at their beginnings was… “we want to index every website” it was such an understated and flippant thing, I mean, we all thought… “yeah a search engine, big deal” … yet look at what they now have at their fingertips, all that data, all that content indexed on million and millions of sites and control of the web basically… way more than a search engine indexing a couple of 100,000 sites these days we all agree!

That indexing of everything is what concerns them about facebook no doubt except facebook are doing it all differently and faster because the web is already massive and they are tapping into a bigger pool from day one in their own way.

But they are losing some control over the way things flow, how traffic moves.

It’s all business, that matters

Google are not running your business though, you are!

Change the tune, ignore Googles tinkling on the ivories a bit more.

The game is changing, the new band is playing, the people.

While most people online with sites and such are chasing ranking, getting ahead with the “game” and building it up, more backlinks, more eyeballs, more money, and so on… they are all still working to Googles tune and in many cases relying on it.

Maybe one time getting that ranking and search traiffic was more important for everyone and anyone, but with the fact social media is now also feeding this web and the users are doing it all by their own rules, they decide who gets to see things and when.

This means you can if sensible enough and smart enough to see how they work play the “game” in a different way which Google have less control over, all you have to do is find those with the reach and influence within the niche you are aiming for.

The search engines, especially Google can’t and won’t ignore what happens there, they know where and how your site gets spread, by whom too, they know more than we realise, importantly though is the fact they can’t ignore it all so it will count at some point and that will count in ranking etc.

Just do what is good for your business

If you are just blogging away, not looking at it as a business, it means you too because sometime along the line you probably will look at it differently, the main thing is to just be realistic and look at where you want the business or blog to go and how you will get it there.

Don’t hope that Google will be the sole traffic source in getting you there.

Portland Bill's swings
My nieces and nephew enjoying Portland Bill's swings 🙂

Everyone has heard that common saying, indeed my youngest asked me recently what it meant …

“It’s all swings and roundabouts”

Something which we could apply to everything really, in short I’ve always taken it to mean “karma” … “what goes round comes round” and it’s something I heard my mum say a fair bit during my childhood. 🙂

What we put in is what we get out of it, good or bad so just do more good for yourself and others, it comes back to you, don’t dance to a single entity’s tune.

Basic SEO is Googles tune, yes it is important overall but the be all and end all, I don’t actively, in a real sense, bother with SEO much, as long as YOU the reader understand the post, possibly share it, link to it, great. 🙂

Don’t rely on it too much and start looking at other ways to get better traffic, which ironically will also help you in Google. 😉

I may have rambled slightly, but what do you think?

Isn’t it time we took control back in some sense?

I’m with you; the people – or at least the tiny minority that “get it” are far more important than those running the game we were all born into. We get to choose whether we are going to keep playing or not. Even when we choose to participate the wise among us should pay attention to what the game REALLY is.

One thing we call have to do is realize that 99+% of people are not interested in knowing that there even IS a game. My philosophy is only the fraction of the 1% who are awake and have decided the same way really matter to what we do. The others may read our blogs but at least in my case they’ll probably dismiss much of what I share as crazy.

As long as Google keeps putting me on page one for tons of keywords, and as long as they keep sending me a check every month, I’m gonna keep my mouth shut. 🙂

      Ha ha,

Good point mate, then again, you won’t rely on them will you?

If they pull the rug out from under you, what then? 😉

Why it’s a great idea to look at as many alternatives as possible when it comes to getting that all important traffic… and even then, it can only help keep you up there on top of big G’s pile. 😉

      Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the comment, I should tell you, your comment was caught by askimet, not sure why, but your link was possibly the reason, edited it to the main url, no offence, it’s likely your less likely to get caught in there i think if your link was just to the main site url.

No idea, anyway, you should be able to comment ok now, welcome by the way. 🙂

Every marketing plan should have more than one, one dimensional stuff hardly works anywhere these days… there are more then a few ways to take advantage of the dominance of Google I agree, but I also feel that the bigger portion of traffic you get by other means will mean you wil get more in Google…if done right.

I agree, but the less we rely on them, the more control we get over things for ourselves.

Hard to ignore them, but there are ways to succeed without having to rely on them.

Here’s something to think about very carefully.

Do you click on adsense ads? (no)

Do you know anyone that does? (no)

What if Google sends you to a page where the adsense ads are the most relevant links on the page? Where the ads are the information?

    Something to think about.

      Hey Dave,

Good point, on sites like this it’s crap… 😉

Even on the sites it works well on, I’d bet they would be better off doing their own affiliate stuff, less sales but better return.

Definitely something think about that is though mate, I agree.
