I love you readers and the comments you give me, the snippets of gold that you share without any want or need for anything in return. Thanks… Mean’s alot.

http://comluv.com?ref=robsellen-80381I think I may need some advice and wisdom off more of you… if you don’t mind, you see…

Sometimes people say something that has way more weight in itย  than even they realise. ๐Ÿ˜‰

It can be a sort of “throw away comment” yet to the right person it can be a golden nugget. I had one of them today… maybe you have another. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I wrote of a few things lately about things I have been deciding over what to do, and someone gives me a priceless bit of honesty that helped me in a huge way. In several ways…

Though it does make me wonder…

And…

Wonder a bit more… so maybe I should just ask. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Striking a balance

You see, yesterday I wrote of the differences between my site here, and the Portland-Bill one, the look of them, the way they work and such… one thing I missed and it does matter, is ease of use to the reader. That is, how you get about the site and how it works for you.

I wrote that I am sticking to WordPress whatever happens, because it’s so adaptable and good. With a ton of plug ins and a great open source community building it up all the time I would be mad to use anything else. ๐Ÿ˜‰

But the differences between the sites highlight something for me, all the fancy looks and scrollers, and such (Parallax) on the Portland site are all well and good, but is it easy to navigate, use?

Is it really functional enough to the most important aspect of any website? … the reader.

We have to do our best to strike a balance between it looking good and being usable. Always. So it matters.

Is this simple site here easy to cope with?ย If so, great, if not, what problems do you have? What would you see improving it? Please do comment below letting me know, I will take all comments seriously.

As someone said to me today…

The Portland site looks great but I am confused by some of it, I will get there though.

To me that’s already a problem…

Confusion is the last thing I want anyone to have, as soon as they hit a site and start looking around. Food for thought. ๐Ÿ˜‰

A picture while I think about it. ๐Ÿ™‚

There is another big difference between the sites though, and one I am contemplating changing here on this site …

Home or blog

I’ll explain… on Portland-bill when you hit the site, you are sat on the “home” page, and if you scroll down a little you will see the “blog post” as boxes and the related image to the post itself… on many sites the home page would have a link to “blog” along the top bar or something… so the blog is part of the site as you see on Portland bill, I just don’t have a “blog” link on there, you see them on the main page anyway.

Here, you hit the blog, straight away, as really that’s what it is and what I have, a blog.

But I could change that.ย  ๐Ÿ˜‰

Do I need or want to though? That’s another dilemma I have to deal with.

Why a home page anyway, if I decide to?

Mainly because it allows me to expand the site in a bigger better way. I can add so much to it that way, and have the blog as an active part of the site, you wouldn’t miss any post at all, but the main page as you hit robsellen.com would be able to have more on it.

I could deliver better value and more of it too by having other aspects added to the site.

Lots of ideas regarding this too… But would love some input from you, the readers, is this site easy and usable enough?

Would you come here if I changed it and let me know if it’s worse or better?

Does the Portland site confuse you at all?

I appreciate any and all comments you have… Thanks.

I love you lot but can you help me

Ok this is just my perspective but you have 2 sites – why? Do you put the same stuff on both? Do you attract the same audience? What are the aims of each?
Your rob Sellen seems to me to be a blog/ forum type place where you start the thread and others join in? Perhaps others will initiate in time too! The Portland bill site I’d much more information, places and activities etc perhaps more for the person interested in Portland to find out about stuff!
In addition you have your poetry site, and there are the Portland pictures sites etc! Perhaps stuff from these could occasionally be fed into the PBill site – showcase !!!
Decide on your market and purpose and it will become clear
    Xxx

      Hi mum…

Great seeing you on here. Love you more than the rest… ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ lol…

I have two, cos you know this one is just mine, and the portland one is portland based, a focus ๐Ÿ˜‰ I need it.. eh ๐Ÿ˜‰
Well you said it all there, that’s the aim, at the moment yeah the audiences do cross over… but as you said, I can do more focused stuff , more informative stuff about Portland and beyond on the other site.

In regards to this post, I was just thinking about the different set ups… I could do alot with a home page ๐Ÿ˜‰ Just deciding if I should or not ๐Ÿ˜‰

Love you mum, and thanks… xx

Ok so tech stuff leave me out of it lol! But still need to understand the aim of the Portland bill site ? When Danny set it up was it a sort of information / advertising activity type site? There is a big need for a showcase of what Portland has to offer the visitor – this could be it! In addition you could do features like the Southwell street fayre so visitors know whatโ€™s on when they come, groups like Portland community action may be interested etc.
Your rob sellen site appears at the moment to be much more about stimulating discussion and out of that should come stuff to put on the pb site but for people like me and Lesley we wouldnโ€™t need to go and see it there because it will have started on your site!

          Ha.. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I will.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The aim of the Portland site is to write about Portland, and get people engaging with the site itself, I’m getting there in that too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yeah sort of, when Dan set it up he set up a few, he has a better one on his Love Portland site.
But yeah that was the sort of aim…

I still want to do, that, get it busy, write regular post, share info, pictures, showcase people and places and businesses, showcase things happening like you said, sell ads to local businesses and just grow it from there.

Yeah, not everyone here sees the Portland site, vice versa too…
I wont be posting similar things on both sites… just getting both active… but yeah, I will write more thought provoking stuff, and other things of interest… to me and readers… a blog as it should be ๐Ÿ˜‰

Cheers mum…. great advice. ๐Ÿ˜‰ love you. x

It’s partly why I added a members section to the Portland site, so I can get people engaged with the site itself. ๐Ÿ™‚ Look at the top bar and you see members. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyone can join via the black bar across the top.

      I agree Annette…..
Rob is so good at what he does but those interested shouldn’t have to hop from one site to another, as there is so much similarity…….
I personally think that Rob would benefit from one site incorporating all of his knowledge, as well as others views……..
