I love you readers and the comments you give me, the snippets of gold that you share without any want or need for anything in return. Thanks… Mean’s alot.
I think I may need some advice and wisdom off more of you… if you don’t mind, you see…
Sometimes people say something that has way more weight in it than even they realise. 😉
It can be a sort of “throw away comment” yet to the right person it can be a golden nugget. I had one of them today… maybe you have another. 😉
I wrote of a few things lately about things I have been deciding over what to do, and someone gives me a priceless bit of honesty that helped me in a huge way. In several ways…
Though it does make me wonder…
Wonder a bit more… so maybe I should just ask. 😉
Striking a balance
You see, yesterday I wrote of the differences between my site here, and the Portland-Bill one, the look of them, the way they work and such… one thing I missed and it does matter, is ease of use to the reader. That is, how you get about the site and how it works for you.
I wrote that I am sticking to WordPress whatever happens, because it’s so adaptable and good. With a ton of plug ins and a great open source community building it up all the time I would be mad to use anything else. 😉
But the differences between the sites highlight something for me, all the fancy looks and scrollers, and such (Parallax) on the Portland site are all well and good, but is it easy to navigate, use?
Is it really functional enough to the most important aspect of any website? … the reader.
We have to do our best to strike a balance between it looking good and being usable. Always. So it matters.
Is this simple site here easy to cope with? If so, great, if not, what problems do you have? What would you see improving it? Please do comment below letting me know, I will take all comments seriously.
As someone said to me today…
The Portland site looks great but I am confused by some of it, I will get there though.
To me that’s already a problem…
Confusion is the last thing I want anyone to have, as soon as they hit a site and start looking around. Food for thought. 😉
A picture while I think about it. 🙂
There is another big difference between the sites though, and one I am contemplating changing here on this site …
Home or blog
I’ll explain… on Portland-bill when you hit the site, you are sat on the “home” page, and if you scroll down a little you will see the “blog post” as boxes and the related image to the post itself… on many sites the home page would have a link to “blog” along the top bar or something… so the blog is part of the site as you see on Portland bill, I just don’t have a “blog” link on there, you see them on the main page anyway.
Here, you hit the blog, straight away, as really that’s what it is and what I have, a blog.
But I could change that. 😉
Do I need or want to though? That’s another dilemma I have to deal with.
Why a home page anyway, if I decide to?
Mainly because it allows me to expand the site in a bigger better way. I can add so much to it that way, and have the blog as an active part of the site, you wouldn’t miss any post at all, but the main page as you hit robsellen.com would be able to have more on it.
I could deliver better value and more of it too by having other aspects added to the site.
Lots of ideas regarding this too… But would love some input from you, the readers, is this site easy and usable enough?
Would you come here if I changed it and let me know if it’s worse or better?
Does the Portland site confuse you at all?
I appreciate any and all comments you have… Thanks.
