Crap products wrapped in nice words! :)

Words sell!

There is a reason copywriters are in demand within the Internet marketing arena, as part of their make money online endeavours. Not to say it’s all crap products, but let’s face it, how many of these products under-deliver?

Hmmmm, most? :) Yeah, thought you might agree…

Copywriting is an art form and a rewarding one at that, it’s not unheard of for a copywriter to get paid tens of thousands for one sales-letter, granted they make take several weeks or months to get that salesletter down to perfection, no matter, it’s still good money however you look at it.

We all know one of the surest ways to make money online is to have your own product and if you are lucky / sensible an affiliate set up to get that army of sellers shifting it for you.

More importantly…

Do you really need a copywriter, considering it could hurt your reputation?

Before the copywriters slam me for that, let me explain why I say it… :P

First impressions count, yes, but what about the first impression others get from the buyers?

Let’s not forget, the copywriters are doing the job to the best they can, their aim is for you to get as many sales as possible as a result of that salesletter, it’s however, not their job to deliver on the promises… it’s yours, yet they don’t care if you fail or succeed after the initial purchase, why would they?

Their job is done and you made your big bunch of ales, their reputation as a copywriter is still intact, if done right.

If you have created something to sell it needs to be so good it’s a no brainer anyway, or better than the salesletter let’s on, which may sound odd but the one thing that turns people off is useless hype, that is the problem with the overpromise and underdeliver situation, the promises are more often than not right there on the salesletter!

Consider this, we all know targeted search engine traffic is the real aim when it comes to getting buying traffic and you get one chance to make a first impression… so you may be thinking “well it’s better to get a good salesletter to make more sales, cos then I make more money” but, what about when the buyers see they bought into hype and false promises?

Which is why they will tell others about the under-delivering on the promises, make no mistake they do tell others.

Why risk that, long term you will ruin all your efforts.

You don’t need to spend silly money on copy, maybe people want it to promote their stuff, it’s not needed though.

Write your own copy, be honest, be true to the real benefits you can deliver on.

Look, in my opinion if you’re smart enough to create a product, especially a written one, you’re smart enough to convey what the product can or will do for others. ;)

Let’s face it, if you have written something good then it’s likely your passion would stand out and there is no reason you can’t show that same passion in the sales-letter with honesty and without the need to write hype. :D

No need to hypnotise your readers or potential buyers, don’t insult them with hypnotic copy or tactics like that, it will bite you on the ass.

It’s all in the relationship and your copy is often the first meeting between you and the buyer, they will make some judgement on that copy, should you then have a product that doesn’t live up to the hype your copywriter has kindly overdelivered on, in order to just get that sale, you are then having to work harder at maintaining any relationship with those disgruntled and disappointed buyers.

On the other hand if they see your copy has a touch of your honesty, a touch of reality and they relate to it well, when they get the product and see it has a similar vein of honesty and reality, they will know you delivered on your promises, because you didn’t make it out to be better than what they actually see, your continued relationship is likely to be alot smoother and last alot longer!

If you are to create something, don’t create crap, then wrap it in clever, nice words… ;)

  1. Hey Rob,

This might seem like a really dumb question, but what exactly does a copy writer do? Aren’t we all copy writers producing unique content?

    Serious question brother

Rob, That was well said and I agree to a point. You describe the MMO/IM Copywriters who have to find creative ways to put lipstick on a pig. Good copy in niches like weight loss or vacuum cleaners are worth their weight in gold. And they aren’t selling crap in most cases. I totally get your point but thought I should mention that there are copywriters in niches that don’t prey on noobs buying pipe dreams. Honesty works in the IM niche but not as well in oil filters – professionalism does. Nicely written Rob. ;-)

      Hey Griz, :)

      Hope ya well mate?

Thanks for that comment, I agree there are some great copywriters that will never prey on noobs, I think “professionalism” was probably the right word there. ;)

Some of the sales-letters out there are very slick… I can see why people but stuff they never need, they must wonder how it happened. :D

We could all learn alot from the good copywriters out there.

Did you do that 10,000 word post then Griz? :P

I’m in awe of the really good copywriters. And marketers who come up with taglines and phrases that are remembered and repeated. It is a unique talent, but those of us non-professional copywriters can write good copy if we truly stand by our product [or another's] and understand it fully. I find personal experience is one of the best tools in selling, but it has to be honest [of course].

I must say, this gives me another thought as well. I’m trying to figure out the best way to “sell myself” to potential employers and copywriting works in this manner as well. Thanks for opening my eyes [sometimes I need a nudge] and giving me a new angle to explore.

      Hey Anne,

I am also in awe of some of them, they do an amazing job and yet some of them find it so effortless, something to admire that is.

Your point about understanding, that’s a good one. :)

You don’t need to “sell yourself” really, just be you… ;)
There is noone else like you!
