Had a fascinating discussion with a friend recently, over the hour or so we chatted things took some funny turns and we meandered across thoughts we didn’t expact to at the start, yet they got us both thinking very seriously about it, it’s all good.
My friend seemed to feel he couldn’t “score a goal” as he put it, shooting for niches, doing all this shite we do, trying to make money online and get that elusive consistent success.
So, I said, “move the bloody goal post!” in all my wisdom, before he started telling me what he was shooting for, cos you know… been there, done it, still doing it!
He was seriously bothered because he felt he wouldn’t ever be rich, (which in a sense they guarantee it with stating it) and therefore not happy.
But, surely I said, you know that…
Money can’t buy everything, especially not happiness
Ya mum was right you know, it sure can’t, plenty of people have proof of that in the world, yeah money helps in life only because it’s a means to an end.
Only you can really know what will make you happy, how far things need to go before you really are happy.
Only you can really get you there too, no-one else is going to magically make you happy.
But if it relies on you being rich then that’s a shame.
Many a rich person who is a miserable bastard out there, don’t you know?
I met a few myself over the years, I know plenty of poor buggers too and I tell you this, they are the most generous in nature, say’s something right there, gotta give to get… that includes happiness.
Happiness ~ For none is without, for all it’s within
Looking in the wrong place for it is never going to work and nor is expecting something to give it to you.
Happiness is a feeling and nothing more, why do you need anything to make you have a feeling? You don’t!
Like that little image said, people may see it but only you can feel it.
How many times have you heard people say to others, “what you looking so happy about?” then the person replied, “oh nothing really, why you ask?”
Yeah a few times, me too, funny though to notice they always say, what you “looking” so happy about… and often the person asked don’t even realise they look happy, cos they probably don’t feel it anyway, and feeling it is what counts!
Yet, what about “blimey, you won the pools or lottery or sommat?” and then you hear some reply like, “Oh nothing, just someone I am thinking about” or similar, you know, they have fallen for someone… *sigh!
Big difference there, didn’t just look happy, the asker doesn’t even say looking, they didn’t think about because the person was oozing it, it was almost tangible… a lotto or pools win, yeah that’s a pretty good looking happiness don’t you think?
But it’s not the money that gives you that feeling, it’s thinking about what it will do for you, that excitement of knowing you can get those things you think about.
Don’t actually have to have it to get that feeling, do you?
Bob Marley was right… Don’t worry, be happy!
With good reason, things just work out in the end on many cases, not all, many though, we all sit there and almost chuckle at the stupidity of the stress we put ourselves under the week before, worrying over what now seems pointless!
Haven’t you? I sure have, almost too bloody often!
Remember this, if you are sat at a pc reading this, you are pretty rich, relatively, to alot of the world, plenty don’t even eat, so being humble in knowing that is all it takes for me to say, yeah, I am, thanks for pointing it out.
I am alive, that is just cause to be happy!
Be happy with what you have, anything else is a bonus
But if it really is money that will get you happy, or buy what you feel you need to be happy…
Be realistic and get there faster.
That’s what my mate and I realised over the hour we talked, when it comes to all this lark about making money online, we both agreed and it’s almost backed up by the amount of times we see people say it online and people ask me too, that is, most don’t think in terms of ”I want to make a million next year online just pushing some button” but more like…
“How can I get an extra £500 to £1000 a month to help with life’s benefits, you know, just to boost what we are on now is all we need, where do I get that?” and that I have been asked many a time, except they want it mostly for no effort, which the answer from me, usually, is “that will take you ages!”
But they are right, for most, that really is all that’s needed to make them feel happier, a second income of sorts and in these times that’s likely to be sounding attractive to many too.
Asking ourselves the right questions is important
Because the real first question and aim is to say…
“How can I make my first pound, dollar online”?
But even better to ask… where and how can I give at least a pound or dollar in value?
I dunno…
Maybe buy this and then act on it, and then stick your own link up on your own blogger blog and write a great pre-seller post where you explained how that book helped you do what it shows you and you got results, then they may buy from your link…and you got ya money back from one sale, which is all you need, then after that any sales is profit, get more sales and get these and act on them, write about them too, share your link.. oh yeah, sorry, I guess you get the drift!
You are sharing value there, experience and short cuts for someone.
Do that first earner and then start looking ahead!
I don’t care how long ya legs are, you still gotta take that first step like everyone else.
Don’t think about the money, but about what you will do with it and use that as the motivator to being happier, whatever it is you think you need that will make you happy, if it cost money, put it in perspective within the big picture.
The first earner you get is the exciting one, you will be really happy with it and it really does shift your mentality and boost your motivation, just knowing it can and does happen, even to the likes of us.
Whoever is in the room with you when you notice that may give a puzzled look when you stopped jumping around like an idiot and then explain you earned £1.50 with your bloody hard work over the last month!
They won’t understand, don’t worry, we do
Don’t let yourself think you can’t do it though!
Even happiness takes work of some sort
There is no escaping that unless you can be totally happy in the moment, like when you with your children, or doing something you are passionate about, lost within whatever moment it is.
They are that though, moments, fleeting yet powerful.
Constant happiness is a rare thing if you ask me, who is constantly happy out there?
So it’s up to us to stretch them moments out and enjoy what we get for what it is, not dwell, just be.
If money means you can do that then go make some!

I totally agree with the concept of realizing what we already have and being grateful for it. As you pointed out, most of us are already in a pretty good place in life if we’re sitting around reading blogs on a PC! Yes, blogging can be work, but if we focus on giving value and take small steps, we can enjoy the process immensely.

Hi Jean,
I agree, most people don’t even realise how fortunate they are, including me at times.
Enjoying the process really does matter doesn’t it?
Thanks for commenting, glad I am not the only one thinking along these lines.

So true Rob. I never say that I want to be rich. I just want to make enough money to pay my bills, live comfortably and go on vacations around the world. That’s all!

Not much then?
I bet that’s what 95% of us want in reality, what more do we need than that?
It’s funny as another friend said the other week, “wish I could just win the lotto” and I said…”what would you do if you won it on saturday?”
He proceeded to say get this, get that, do this, that and the other…I said, “but there is still only 24 hours in a day”
I got a puzzled look from him then..
So I just said, “hey write everything you would do or get down, and I’ll bet you get bored after a few hours of doing that” only to be asked “what for?”… lol
Oh well, he could’nt see what I was getting at, but when I said, “if you win, you would still have to choose wisely, just as you do now anyway, so just do that and be happy”

Awesome article Rob! We can only make our own happiness, not money, not anything. It’s such a popular phrase, “Money can’t buy happiness.” And you have taken the explanation to another level. Solid work man!

I’ll never forget the defending silence I was greated with when I was jumping around having hit the $100 Adsense payout in a month – my partner really didn’t get it! He gets it now though – its just that people who are used to a regular paycheck don’t realise that once you make $100 you can make $1000!

Ha ha, yeah Lissie,
I remember getting my very first one and thinking… huh?! wow!
This shit is real?!
It certainly gives you drive to keep going and the realisation that you know, yeah, this does bloody work but it also takes work.

Chasing money for money’s sake is a pointless exercise because people loose sight of what’s really important, family friends etc in their rush to amass riches.
Great post, thanks for sharing.
