A stunning sunset over Chesil beach here on Portland. Taken a couple of years ago.
Just because… 😉
No white coats sent round, so it’s all good.
Did get a few interesting comments about the latest few post though.
But it does seem like you lot like the Portland post more, yeah the webstats tell me that. 😉
Can’t imagine why? 😯
What seems to interest people most from what I see on Facebook groups and such is …
The Old pictures
Not really surprising.
Portland has an interesting past and some of the old pictures we all see are fascinating.
I do have a few but they are not my pictures, I just downloaded them when I saw them, if anyone knows the genuine owners, please do let me know so I can credit them.
It’s great to compare them to modern times and see the changes.
The Cove Inn, which sat right on the beach and probably saw some pretty horrendous storms in the past when it was this vulnerable.
Now it is behind the sea wall, which was built in the 1960’s to protect the whole street behind this pub. Most of our parents remember it being built.
You’ll see where I am standing is slightly to the left of the point the first one was taken and a little lower as I am on the sea wall itself and a little further back. . . I tried to guess the right spot but it’s not so easy. You can see all the changes since.
Those of you that are local and know what I refer to when I say look at where Lankridge is in the first picture, do you think its moved nearer to the houses in Killicks hill area? Possibly it just seems that way due to there being no houses there to gauge the distance and placement.
The street behind the Cove Inn and the sea wall, it’s where I live actually. 😉
Here it is as seen many moons ago, not sure of the date but it’s old. I’m sure someone will know roughly due to the well shown there, which has now gone to be replaced by a main road.
I took this one below just to compare them, not sure I got the right spot but pretty close. A little further back than I should have been but you can clearly see the changes since, shame the cars are also in the way, then again that is one of the main changes 😉
I may well take another from the correct spot on a quiet day and see if I can do a better one.
Below is a fascinating picture looking down towards the area of the last picture, it would be amazing to find out just who the ladies are. I am guessing the wrecked cottage on the right side was from one of the many times the sea come over and crashed into the homes.
Looking down that road now you can see the differences since. On the left of the below picture is the back of the seawall itself. The sloped wall covered in odd stones sticking out of it. Also you see it is a safer place to leave the boats! 😉
There are so many fascinating photos of Portland of old, I really like comparing them to the times we are in, what will it all look like in 100 years from now?
I have plenty more to share and some I need to go get the modern picture to post with them, so I will set out to do just that.
Hope you liked them, and if so, feel free to comment below or share using the buttons…
