Well I'd not use wordpress.com (their hosted service) if I had ANY thoughts of monetisation...blogger is better for that. ;)

At least they allow it.

I'd probably recommend WordPress.com over Blogger, but yeah, if you have no interest in monetization (maybe even if you do), no need to be self-hosted.

Denise, feeling your pain here...

When I get some time, I'm going build out a suite of sites using CakePHP, CodeIgniter and Webby.

That way I can fully script everything from localhost.

No way I want to run more than, say, a dozen WP installations.

http://disqus.com It's like a commenting platform which you can utilise on a blog, yet it also pulls comments from elsewhere that relate to your blog, for example, a tweet. ;)

I do not know what disqus is. I guess I will have to look it up and see what it can do.

Hi Denise.

I agree blogger blogs have a great place in the big picture, and will still use them myself, but they could sure have been improved more over the years, I also agree, I have never had a blogger blog hacked, it just doesn't seem to happen often, they are good in the respect.

As for the updating of WP, I guess it's not to bad when you only have one, or two. ;)

Alot to be said for the static sites... I know I need to get more of them out there. :)

Is there no way to add disqus to a static site?

Thanks for the comment.

Rob, I guess I am out voted here. I like Blogger blogs and use them a lot. I also use Wordpress. I have around 150 self-hosted WP blogs but the constant upgrading is a pain. Lately I have also gone back to using more static sites as I do not have to keep upgrading them and I find static sites rank just as well as blogs. The only problem with static sites is I have not found a way to make comments available.

I find Blogger sites are great for Micro-niche sites. I can get my ten posts up, send traffic, monetize and forget them. I have never had a Blogger blog hacked, but I sure have with WP. I like WP for my more social sites and for the fact that I can get an aged domain and get instant Google luv. I use my static sites more for product sites and e-commerce where I do not need to interact too much with customers.

They all serve their purpose. It just depends on where or what you plan to do with them.

That was my biggest peeve on the blogger FTP set up, it used to be like that in blogspot though, didn't it?

It drove me nuts, and sometimes it would hang and you'd lose your work.... yeah, *sigh, a good few times I almost put a fist shaped hole in the monitor! :P

Um, yeah, I agree in a way, I thought http://robsellen.com/posterous-the-big-easy/ it was neat, still do, but yeah, for a complete noob and someone who likes just working with something like a purely email format, perfect.

Thanks for that advice you gave me Andy, by the way. :)

I started with Blogger a few years back but didn't like the horrendous 'Publishing' lag and quickly moved to WordPress.com shortly after it launched.

I'm just a small-time blogger but I think WordPress.com is equally easy for any blogger to get started and the wealth of available plugins and themes is a big plus for WP.

However, for a personal 'blogger', and for pure ease of use, I am convinced I would use Posterous/Tumblr if I was starting out today.

PS. I don't even use WP any more (as the complex UI infuriated me) so now I run Habari.

Thanks mate,

Took a while, but hoping I can grow it at a faster rate with the plans I have, good times. ;)

Blogger is just so simple for the start, no matter what you plan on doing it's something anyone and everyone should test, try it is why I say, who knows where it will lead. :D

It's also a great starter to learning aspects of html, and css.

Even if that beginner market was their target, there's no reason to not have it the best it can be. ;)

If they had done it better and done more for it, many people wouldn't have ever bothered with WPress.
