So just three post ago I explained my situation and then the next post asked if you could help me help myself
I had ONE response, which I was greatful for them doing…I appreciated it alot….but from the amount of people who read it it was a bad % of action.
Seems the people who really make money online are the IMers who sell crap to other IMers, via HYPE!
Well, it has certainly got me thinking and the fact I spoke to a few REAL friends offline aboiut things, friends who I respect and listen to, these friends are friends who know little about online stuff, but know ME well… I am “way too nice” online…is the advice they say.
They feel I should be more like I can be offline, which is somewhat a strange thing because they say I am a little “nice” offline too in some ways but I also have a streak of hardness in my honesty, and these friends also say they KNOW if they had an issue they could come to me knowing I won’t sugarcoat things…if someone else has bothered them or hurt them they know I would certainly “say something” or help in some way.
“You need to just DO what you feel will work for you online but show more of that hard honesty streak online too.”.
This really got me thinking and I have to say…they are right.
Some of you disapointed me.
Alot of others online have angerd me.
Ah well… lessons learnt.
To many want what they can’t have…instant results, instant riches, yet IMers sell bullshit that hypes this very “want” up.
Sad, but hey IF thats what works… should I do it?
You tell me.
Interestingly yesterday was a great day, saw ALOT of people here on the sea wall during the battle of the bands gig, and so many said, “how do you do this, that, do people really make money online?”
So I relaise I DO know enough and more than most about this lark, and I tell you the ones making the most are the snake oil sellers, if you don’t think so… why not?
Who makes the money if not these IMers who are mainly fakers?
Ok, if I have to do something to stay online should I sell what I do know?
I would rather just GIVE it all away on this blog and let others decide the true worth…but it won’t work fast enough or well enough, and most are just to plain happy to take!
This anger and disapointment is going to drive me more now, but you probably won’t see it as I will not be online much longer, so you also won’t get what I GIVE freely.
Stuck in no mans land and it’s getting bigger and lonelier all the time!
Any thoughts?

I agree that the most visible money-makers on-line are those who crow about how much money they’ve made. But the reason they do that is to get people to click on their blog to make money.
It’s the people who are out there really doing a great job, and helping others learn the ropes, that make good money and don’t advertise their total income every week or month. I want to be one of those people. I want some newbie to say, “Wow, thanks for the tip. That really worked!” I want people to come to my blog and leave comments like, “I never understood gerunds until now.” LOL
This is my way of saying that there’s nothing wrong with being nice as long as you’re not a doormat. Getting an on-line reputation doesn’t have to be because you are a hard-nosed mogul. Be a good guy, wear a white hat! Just look out for people trying to take advantage of you.
You are spot on there, thats EXACTLY what I would like, but it’s longer term, I NEED a short term solution too, and the way others do it is to fake it and sell crap.
I don’t want to do that of course…but what do I do?
That’s a dilemma.
)
One I will sort out.
Oh dear, you don’t sound as if you are in a very good place (and I don’t mean Portland!) I read your broadcast but as I know nothing about making money online I didn’t reply. I am building a web site so I can sell my books, that’s the only way I know to make money out of my blog but that’s no use to you, is it?! Sorry.
I know where you’re coming from. I talk to my close business partners too about what’s happening on the internet. It’s really more than just the visible money-makers online. We see a lot of other people scamming themselves and many disillusioned…
The truth is, IMers aren’t the only ones making money. There are those who sell marketing systems and tools, there are those who sell leads, there are those who sell software, there are those who sell hardware, there are those who sell a service, there are those who sell books that actually change lives…
Those who learn how to market online will have an edge over others when it comes to marketing/selling a product. Those who struggle are probably those who really never get their mindset right in the first place, wanting to own a business but actually looking for another job on the inside.
I was like that in 2001. In 2002, things took a turn. Since then, things just get better through the years.
Things that seem to be “crappy” are sometimes the very stuff that work. So, have a good look and test them out before coming to any conclusion.
There are indeed many rehashed products, but there are just as many rehashed stuff offline. There’s always variety to tailor to different kinds of people. People still buy them, you know. Thus, the important skill set to have in marketing online is the ability to target the right market.
To have “original” things online/offline is just how we sometimes wish to see in order to say to ourselves that that’s worth our time etc. When we’re asked to reinvent the wheel, it’s usually very exciting. Yet, that’s one of the surest way to go offtrack easily and put our sustenance at risk.
Having said that, I must add that I’ve no problem with being creative =) In fact, to market effectively, that’s one of the criteria. Yet, we can always outsource if we’re not so good at something =)
If you want something really short term, try selling things that marketers need to be successful in their campaigns. Remember to target your market and you should be fine =)
Have an open mind, the possibilities are endless my friend =)
I have found that what works as far online is quality of content. Plain and simple. Leo LaPorte (of radio and podcast fame) says the same thing. One has to have something that has quality in order for one’s blog or internet presence to have staying power. You cannot sell something that isn’t truly you either.
Early on, I went to John Chow’s blog (an experiment in making money online) and found it to be quite disappointing in that it left me feeling completely empty inside. I believe that if one is to make a go of supporting oneself online, one must be true to oneself.
You have a voice that is unique. You have a point of view that is intriguing. Capitalize on that!
